'[PIC] RealICE from Microchip at US$500'

One of the announcement in the 16-bit seminar is that Microchip will soon
come out a cheap RealICE to give the user an cheap option for ICE. It will
have real time capability (better than ICD2) but it will only cost US$500.
This is much cheaper than the current ICE2000 and ICE4000.

The information regarding REALICE is still sparse but the following
website has already mentioned it.

Very good. ICD2 has too many problems for people to depend heavily on it.

Really?

I've depended pretty heavily on it and have rarely been disappointed.

There are a few "quirks" involved when using an ICD2, and there are
limitations, but as long as you keep them in mind I find it to be a
wonderful tool.

I think ICD2 is really value for money. Still I think it won't be as good as
a real ICE. As a programmer it also leaves out some features. For example:
1) to go to Hi-Z mode after programming so that program can start to run
2) to control the sequence of target Vdd and Vpp
Maybe this is hardware/firmware related limitations.

I just tried it with Explorer 16 board dsPIC33 demo program and stepping
through the small program proves to be not as fast as I want.

How is the explorer 16 board? Any major quirks after
the change. Should I read up dspic more to know what
they are talking about in the seminar?

The seminar is just an introduction. I have read a bit the
family manual and the programmer's reference manual.
They handed out the programmer's reference manual
during the seminar. I need to read more on the C30 manual.

I still have the faulty board but I will probably fix it myself
once I have access to a good soldering iron. It is still working
but I need to take care of the reset switch...
