'[PIC] Real time clock and I2C question'

Hi all,
I sent a message earlier but haven't seen it come across so I'll give it
another try.  I have never used a real time clock or I2C comm.  I found a
suitable candidate, DS1388, with I2C and trickle charge for a backup
battery.  Unfortunately I can't find a supplier for it including Maxim.  I
looked at the DS1302 which is not I2C but is available however its 3 wire
interface uses RC3 for a synch clock.  Will this be a problem for using the
other I2C devices?  Any help is appreciated.
Thanks,
FJ

Look at Xicor. I think somebody bought them recently, but they have a
complete I2C clock family and voltage range.

I no longer recommend Maxim or Dallas Semi (also Maxim) for new designs.
These guys are just too flakey.

Thanks for the help.  I wrote them and asked them where I could buy the
DS1388 and they replied back with a link to their website (the same one I
had been to already) that said it couldn't find that part number.  Obviously
the guy didn't check it before he sent the link to me.  I'll check out
Xicor.  Thanks again,
FJ

Ferd,

You can't have hardware SPI and I2C together it is not going to work.
you can add software I2C or SPI. There are so many I2C clocks available
pick some thing else.
You can also add second crystal on pic 32k and use backup
battery as trickle charge and put it in sleep when you  do not need it.
18F family can
run timer2 in sleep mode and you can use nano watt technology to last
longer.

Fred,

I went to maxim-ic.com, typed in ds1388 and it came right back with the
information.  They come in an 8 pin So .150 package and cost $1.66 @1k.
They have a place to order samples, download the datasheet and app notes,
and a bunch of other information.  Just an FYI.

                                              Regards,

I must be an idiot.  I've looked many times and I still don't find it.  I
found a page with the same info you state but when I click the 'buy' button
it takes me to another page that says "no data found".
Thanks,
FJ

Hi,

I've some DS1377C that we could come to an agreement on if you only
need a small quantity, and some code in basic for accessing them using
a 648a or 876.  I'm in Ozland though, so postage may or may not be
more than direct from Maxim - yup I paid U$75 for freight - which is
why I bought a few at the time.

Hi Colin,
I don't see a 1377C listed on Maxim's website.  Did you mean 1388?  If so,
all I can find is a DS1388Z.  I would be interested in the 5V version if you
have that one.
Thanks,
FJ

Hi Fred,

search for DS1337   the 'C' version will appear as an option.

Feel free to email me direct, so as we can take this off list.

It's on their site

http://www.maxim-ic.com/quick_view2.cfm/qv_pk/3696

Have you requested a couple of samples ? As the DS1388 is a
new device, it may be difficult to get it from anywhere but Maxim
at this stage, unless you indent a quantity. If you can't get samples
(unlikely, as the DS1388 is fairly low-priced), you would be better
to look around for the older models, DS1307 etc and I'm sure
most of the major suppliers (RS, Mouser, Digikey) would have it

The latest newsletter I got from Maxim included - the DS3232,
"World's Most Accurate RTC Integrates TCXO ......". Better
than +/- 1min/year they say

http://www.maxim-ic.com/ds3232rtc

Also DS3231

http://www.maxim-ic.com/ds3231rtc

MAX6916/6917, includes uP superviser, SRAM

http://www.maxim-ic.com/MAX6917rtc

and the DS1388, 512x8 EEPROM (!!!)

There are quite a few alternatives. Maxim list about 20. As
Martin suggested, Philips have devices like the PCF8593
