Subject: Stupid Question
I am new to this. I was wondering for this beginner circuit:
http://www.piclist.com/techref/piclist/cheapic/bincnt.htm
does the C = 33pf designate a Crystal? if not, if it is a capacitor then I
am confused by the drawing because it says 32.768 kHz but does not show an
icon for the crystal.
IT MOST CERTAINLY DOES!
Which leads me to a generic question. When designing a circuit how do you
choose which crystal to use?
What timing functions do you need in the design? what serial
communications?
do all projects use the same generally?
None of mine do.
what brand and part number?
This is too much...
Also, what other components need to be ordered (like 5v regulator, etc).
I am going to make an order to digikey and I
dont want to get the stuff and realize I have to place a whole other order
becasue I forgot some stupid support component...
^^^^^^^
You do the COMPLETE specification and design BEFORE you order parts like
crystals etc. You also take the time to spell check before posting, you
add [PIC] to the subject, if you want to avoid Olinisms.

Thomas, have you ever heard of experimenting and learning? I dont have a
specification so there is nothing to plan. I just want to fool around with
some sample projects of all kinds.
As for the spell check, I am using a unix text email client and it doesnt
spell check before sending.
As for the [PIC] I am sorry, I am new and forgot.
Thanks for your extremely helpful reply and your joyful attitude.

Matt,
THere are no stupid questions. In other words, any question is a valid
one and often generates unexpected answers. Keep posting good questions.
Glad to see you are experimenting around with this stuff. I started out
by buying a dozen op amps and plugging 11 of them in backwards before I
figured out what the little dimple on pin 1 was for. If I'd had a
PIClist to ask dumb questions on I would have only fried 3 or 4 of them.
BTW I can't spEll neiTher. Ignore these wags who are a little too PICky
sometimes about irrelevant things like SpeLLin. Gruff Posts about bad
spelling are what the delete key was designed for.

Actually, IMHO, there is one foolish question. The question that is not
asked (possibly for fear of looking foolish) because that question has NO
hope of being answered.
