All in all, ICD2 support is the key here (even only the programming
part). That is why I look into LPLAB following Mark Rages'
recommendation. It is a great piece of software but still
have some problems to be solved.

C compiler support is another nice feature to have but may not
be essential.

Of course, if Wisp628/EasyProg/others can support more chips (more
common flash parts including dsPICs, even though one can not
expect the support level of ICD2), then PIC development under
Linux will be a reality.

But I ask the question again: what functionality does MPLAB have that
you cannot find in other tools. At a casual glance I would say ICD
debugging support and possibly dsPIC support in gpasm.

But the toolset is there.
