'[PIC] MPLAB 8: ready for prime-time yet?'

One of the ways I try to stay out of trouble is by not being an alpha or
beta tester.  Unless it looks like fun of course!

So I have historically been slow to upgrade to new versions of MPLAB.
I'm getting ready to do so and wonder if anyone knows of significant
problems with v8.0 (or v8.1) for use on an XP box.

Thanks for any comments!

Hi Thomas,

Thank you, yes, I did indeed read yours and Bob Axtells comments.  I
wondered if anyone else had anything to say.

Perhaps Xiaofan Chen?

My opinion may not count since I am not a heavy user of MPLAB and
I do not like ICD2 and I do not have Real ICE. A lot of problems with
MPLAB have something to do with either ICD2 and Real-ICE.

Anyway, I will say to use a second computer to test it. In most cases
you will have no problems with the latest version of MPLAB. But you
do not want to ruin your main work system.

Hmmm.
I do plan on using my ICD2. So maybe I'll keep on waiting a bit longer.
Thanks!

Waiting for ICD3?

Cheerful regards,

Bob

Ruining my attire compared to my PC, I would let my
shirt go :)

I think Microchip should develope ICD3 as soon as possible so that not
to hurt its business. Or open up the debug protocol of PIC18/PIC24/dsPIC
and PIC32 so that cheap debugger (including JTAG for PIC24/dsPIC/PIC32).

Real ICE is Microchip's answer to replace ICE2000 (and ICE4000). But there
is a gap between ICD2 and Real ICE.

Just another data point... I uninstalled my old copy of MPLAB and
installed 8.0 yesterday.

Result: all good!  ICD2 runs, no anomalies noted yet.  This is on an XP
box.

Obviously, ymmv.

Congratulations all around. Wish mine worked on ICD2. It works
swimmingly on ICE2K.

Are bookmarks saved with the project ? MC agreed that this
would be an improvement, wondered if it's been done. I could
install 8.0 I suppose, but quite settled with 7.x. The bookmark
thing does annoy me though ......

I'll check it later and let you know.

Negative, I have thte 8.02 and it does not keep the Ctlr+K marks at all.

BTW, I had to recreate one of my project file as it was created by 8.01 and
8.02 crashed when loaded that project. Then I've deleted all the files
except the sources and recreated the whole project - now it works well. I
have a huge SCL file, that is handled at the same speed with 8.x then with
7.41, so I have mixed feelings. The only thing is that PicKit2 is better
supported with 8.x

The lost bookmark!
Delphi (by Borland, the Turbo Pascal evolution) suffers the same
problems from version 1.0!!!
Obviously a lots of programmer, me too, wrote to Borland... maybe in v 20.1b

I think that is an good example of "respect for client".

Awwwhttp://www........

I'd read the release notes and didn't see bookmarks mentioned,
thought I'd ask anyway

It seems silly to go half-way. Great when bookmarks were
added (6.x ?), but they didn't finish the job. I think everything
else in a project is saved. Oh well

Yup. Like they said, still not saved.

I had never used them before but trying them out, I find them quite
handy.  Too bad it's technically impossible to save a bookmark in this
day and age.

Yes, they are (Ctrl K and Ctrl L). I hate closing a project when
it's all set up so I can jump around

The best I've come up with to re-enter them when the project
is re-opened is, before closing, either

(a) leave breaks and spot the red circles when scrolling
(b) leave the text ;bm and Ctrl F / F3
