Don't know if anyone noticed (or cares, for that matter) but MPLAB 7.40
is now available for download at Microchip.

And for everybody who does care but didn't notice: you can get email
notifications from Microchip about that. And about other things (like
changes to erratas).

New in MPLAB IDE v7.40:

   * Find in Files - Search through files located anywhere on your system
without leaving the MPLAB editor.
   * User Defined Window Sets - Customize your window arrangements and
toolbars to maximize productivity at each stage of your design cycle.
   * Code Folding - Collapse/expand C functions for more manageable source
code.
   * Code Browsing - Reduce the time spent searching through code: variable
and function definitions are summoned from any reference.
   * DCMI Plug-In - Control application variables dynamically; view data
graphically using up to four configurable graph windows
   * MPLAB C30 Compiler optimization control - Set complex speed and code
size optimizations with new graphical dialog.
   * MPLAB SIM Logic Analyzer Busses - Group monitored channels as busses
to be graphed on the logic analyzer display.
   * Run to main() - Execute initialization code then halt the system for
instant debug control at the beginning of user C code .
   * README files now in HTML - Navigate easily through hotlinks for
information in the READMEs.

Hope that helps...
Code Folding and browsing are well overdue!

Yes, it's been available for a week now.  They finally fixed the problem of
single stepping with macros in the source code window.

MPLAB 7.40 fixes an issue that was created with using some .COD files
two vendors were using the same entry for different purposes. This is now
resolved.  There are notes on Byte Craft's website for using MPC
with MPLAB

I was expecting support for the PICkit2 in 7.4, and it's an option during install (default is "not").  But
despite my setting the option on, when the install completed the PICkit2 selection in "Programmer" is greyed
out.

Does anyone know if this support isn't actually available yet, or if they've got the setting backwards and
asking for it actually turned it off, or what?

Has anyone got a PICkit2 working with MPLAB yet?

Cheers,

Yes it is working but the only device support (programming and debugging)
is 16F917. I've tested the programming function with a new PICkit 2
demo board and it is working. I am trying  the debugging function as well.

Sample debugging session:
Initializing PICkit 2 version 0.0.0.12
Found PICkit 2 - Operating System Version 1.20.0
Downloading PICkit 2 OS : 1.10.7
Target power not detected - Powering from PICkit 2
PIC16F917 found (Rev 0x3)
PICkit 2 Ready

Running Target
PICkit 2 Ready

Resetting
Programming Target (6/6/2006  10:07:40 PM)
Erasing Target
Programming Program Memory (0x0 - 0x1F)
Verifying Program Memory (0x0 - 0x1F)
Programming Debug Executive (0x-1F00 - 0x1FFF)
Verifying Debug Executive (0x1F00 - 0x1FFF)
Programming Debug Vector
Verifying Debug Vector
Programming Configuration Memory

PICkit 2 Ready

Running Target
PICkit 2 Ready

Target Halted
Stepping Target
PICkit 2 Ready

One catch is that you still use the default linker script and not
the ICD2 linker script. I just figured this out.

More will come at MPLAB 7.50 or later. PICkit 2 has great potential but
we have to wait for the software integration with MPLAB.

That's really strange!  The '917 isn't a chip I know, and it doesn't seem to be a mainstream one - and even
its smaller brothers the 913,4,6 are excluded.  It's odd that MPLAB and the PICkit2 can each support over a
hundred of the same chips, but not together!  I wonder why this is?  Has the feel of a last-minute dash to get
the release out of the door - it's been said for some time that 7.40 would support the PICkit2, and this seems
to be the absolute bare minimum of that.  Even the go/no go indicators in Configure/Select Device have a gap
where the PICkit2 should be!

I'm very surprised that the 16F690 wasn't supported first, because it's the one that comes with the PICkit2
starter kit, and it's the top of the range of 8/14/20 pin PICs that have the same pinout that is supported by
the PICkit2's demo board.

I wonder when MPLAB 7.5 will be released?

Consider the support of MPLAB 7.40 for PICkit 2 as beta.

By the way, 16F917 is the featured product for the PIC16F. I think it is
a nice device and it can replace 16F877A in most cases except that
it is a standard flash product (so no bootloader support). In fact,
16F91x is the recommended device for new design than PIC16F87xA
if flash update is not required.

They have developed a demo board with 16F917 to go with PICkit 2
and I am using the board to test the functionality of PICkit 2 under
MPLAB.

Xiaofan

Is this the "Mechatronics" board?  That's the only one I can find that relates to the 917.

It is called PICkit 2 44-pin Demo Board, a very simple demo board
similar to the LPC demo board which comes with the PICkit 2 Starter Kit.
