'[PIC] Looking for low-cost MP3 player'

Good day to all.

I've got a project coming up where I need a number of low-cost MP3 players that I can modify to suit our specific needs.

I know that there are a number of PIC-based MP3 player designs out there, but I'm looking for something that I can purchase rather than build if possible.

Requirements:

PIC based if possible
storage is SD / MMC card (not CF)
Prefer something that uses a decoder chip newer than the STA013
At least 4 available input pins on the PIC for control inputs
Source code is available and written in Assembler, C18 or CCS 'C' if possible

I prefer to purchase already-assembled PC boards but would consider building them if bare boards (or a PCB design) are available.

We've got an already-existing design that we build for larger projects but its too expensive for this project.  Our existing unit is more of a complete show-control unit that happens to play MP3 files - its got LOTS of i/o and a script interpreter that is fairly flexible.  This project just needs lots of MP3 players.

That's also why I'd prefer to find something that doesn't use the STA013 - we use it in our current player and I don't really like it very much.

Any pointers to available products or designs gratefully accepted.

Many thanks!

dwayne

How many, and how cheap?

We sell a number of bare-board MP3 players that are designed for
hackability:

http://www.sparkfun.com/products/10608

We also sell the bare ICs. All the design files are available so you can
create your
own design based on one of ours if that's how you want to go.

There is also -

I think they're also available form either Mouser or Digikey, they did a distribution deal with one of them.

Many thanks, Colin.  This may be just the ticket.

Yes, it should work with the ChipKit, although I can't say I've tested it.

Browsing the ChipKit documentation, I'd have to say you're probably
going to have very little trouble with it. If you DO use it, and it does
work, drop me a line- I'd be interested to know.
