I'm assuming it will work. Before I waste any time on it, has anyone
successfully used a Picstart Plus programmer on a modern PC without a
built-in serial port?

I find myself needing to program a 16C71, so I have to use a Picstart+
programmer, and none of my day-to-day computers has a serial port. The
computer I'd prefer to use is running Win7 64 bit and my serial adapter
is Prolific-based. But I do have another computer running XP 32 bit if I
have to use that.

Anyone been this route? Successful? I don't need to do any development,
just burn a chip or two.

Thanks,

Bob

Yes, it works fine with the Prolific converters. I don't know about
different chipsets.

Best regards,

Isaac

I use my Promate II on my Windows 64 bit with a Prolific USB to Serial converter. I actually have two different Prolific USB converters but it will only work properly on one of them (the cheapo nasty one).

I've also used it under Linux running Virtualbox in the odd emergency.

Not sure about the Picstart but can't see why not.

I've been using my Picstart+ this way for several years - no problems.

Thanks to all for the unanimous confirmation - I'll give it a shot.
