After further tests...

I can't seem to shut off the SDO pin in slave mode.
(Short of disabling the SPI device that is.)

The suggestion in the errata for shutting down the SDO pin in slave mode
IS TO PUT IT IN MASTER MODE!
How did Olin put it?... Galactically Stupid.

I have a trouble ticket in with Microchip, stay tuned!

Meanwhile, I am writing a bit banged SPI to run on the pins dedicated to the
hardware device.  (I have 96 of these 18F4520 soldered in the system, so
going back to 18F452s is NOT a real option.)

Sigh!
