I have problem to install PICC Lite under Linux (Ubuntu 5.04).
I follow the instruction but I was having problem at the last
step (picl -setup). Anyone here is using it?

"- Run the driver with the -setup option, as root:

       /usr/hitech/picl_8.05PL2/bin/picl -setup"

To start with PIC on Linux, now I will try gputils + Pickit 1
(with 12F629/675). I would also like to try gpsim and Picc Lite.

What is the problem?

were you root when you run it? (tip: whoami )

I tried "sudo /usr/hitech/picl_8.05PL2/bin/picl -setup"
firstly. Not working.

I then enabled the root user (Ubuntu comes default
with root disabled) and run as root. Still not
working.

I will try again this evening and post the error message
later. I am at work now and have no access to my Linux
box.

Don't forget, if you need to do something as root, you can type "su" and
enter your root password, to temporarily get root privileges. You don't
need to enable the root user.

Yes I work as a normal user and then use "su" to gain
root access. In Ubuntu you not have a root user by
default but the first user can issue "sudo" to act
as a root. I have to enable the root account first
in order to use "su".

Typically in those Knoppix-like systems you can do "sudo su" and until you
type "exit" you are root.

The error message is as followed. However when I
tried to compile a C program, it appears to work
normally. Strange. Maybe it is a false alarm.

If the compiler is working, I wouldn't worry about it.

I agree with you. It is good that now I have a
working c compiler (PICC Lite), an assembler (gputils)
and a USB programmer (Pickit 1) under Linux at least
for the 12F629/675 that I will start with.
