By now everybody should know what the Pocket is. If not (where have you
been?), its a great little programmer created by Tony Nixon. For more
info on it go to http://www.bubblesoftonline.com/pocket/pocket.html.

For those of us who love the Pocket (or would like to) but just can't
deal with the Windows software that comes with it, I've started writing
a Unix/Linux clone. It's still in the early stages so it can only
program new messages and chip info, but more is planned. More info and
source code are available at:

http://terrandev.com/~bfoz/pocket/

If there's enough interest (and volunteers) I'll start a sourceforge
site. Until then there's really no need for it.

If you consider to write a Linux version it might be a good idea to join the
http://www.gnupic.org guys. They work on a simulator and an Assemler compatible to
Microchips.

I'm not making a simulator or an assembler. This is just a set of
interface tools for the Pocket (which is programming hardware). However,
I do plan to be able to run these tools from a Makefile in such a way
that you could have a "program" or "install" target that either programs
your chip or sends the hex file to the Pocket.

The http://www.gnupic.org guys have integrated other components to their simulator
and there is a GUI similar to MPLAB and my idea was that you can integrate
your program in there like PICSTART PLUS is integrated to MPLAB. And there
is PICSTART PLUS drivers for Linux that can be integrated there also but to
make the Pocket programmer available as an alternative would be neat.
I'm not a Linux programmer myself but I believe there is a lot of people out
there that can make this project even more interesting by joining the guys
at http://www.gnupic.org. They have some nice ideas to make simulator components
like LCDs and switches that includes real features like switch bouncing
simulating etc. I'm sure they welcome more active developers to join up with
them. I have heard about many people wishing for MPLAB to be open source so
they can improve it and add new features, but I guess that that will not
happen as there are copyright issues that is hard to solve but for all
developers that have an interest in make the development tools as they want
it they have an excellent opportunity to make it with the http://www.gnupic.org
guys.

If there is anything I can do to encourage progress on your effort, please
let me know.

For now, I will add a little note on each piclist.com page to let people
know.

Thanks, hopefully I'll get some volunteers to help code, or at least
test.  Although, what I need most right now is more time.
