'[PIC]:MPLAB project help'

I am having trouble with using MPLAB.
I went to mplab, opened developement mode, selected mplab sim simulator
piced the right processor (pic16f84), click apply. okay.
a screen comes up saying no hex file has been built for this project.
Even though I had a hex file that I created in it. It then was deleted
by the program. So I tried again with the same results.

I then go to new project, name it, then save it to a directory, and the
following dialog box comes up, ITS LABELED AT THE TOP "NEW PROJECT
ERROR" inside the box it says dialog box failed. hlnst=3a4e
hframeWnd=4e0
Thats as far as I can get. I have tried it on 3 different computers,
and
two different versions of mplab 5.11 and 5.40.
What am I doing wrong.
I did search the archives first.

Thanks for your help.

I'm not an expert, but I think you have to "build" the project and let MPLAB
run the assembler on your asm file before it can work with it. Give it a
try.
Good luck

I never use MPLAB to build my projects.  I have a separate source code
control and build system that runs the MPLAB assembler, librarian, and
linker separately.  I only use the MPLAB IDE for debugging.  Works great.

Same as you would, I just don't BUILD from the IDE.  I create a project to
"make" the HEX file I've already made, then start debuggin.  MPLAB finds the
source files and symbols all by itself.  I think it gets this from the COD
file of the same name and in the same directory as the HEX file.
