'[PIC]:El Cheapo board problems'

Hi;
I am getting the RC delay line error, and i don't know what to do.
What type of parallel cable are we supposed to use? Is it a straight through or a file transfer cable?
And does the catode of Q2 (2N3906) connect to the 78L12 or to the sockets?
I am using the 0.74Version so i didn't connect R3,R4,C3 and my Q1 (2N7000) is connected with the source terminal to ground.
My power (all the voltages) seem ok up to step 6 where I'm getting the error.
Thanks,
Kurt Leyba

Hi Kurt,

I think the message you are getting is an error - it really is that the data
line isn't working properly.

The 2N3906's collector (which is what I think you mean) is connected to the
sockets.

As for the cable, it should be a DB-25 male to male parallel transfer cable
and may also be identified as a "Switchbox Cable".

Are you building the PCB from the book or from the design on my web site?

Hey mike;

I bought the book and I've got the board that it came with. You are saying I
can use the parallel transfer cable or switchbox cable? I bought a file
transfer/interlink cable but it says it's not a switchbox cable.

These are the pinouts.

2--------------------15           15--------------------2
3--------------------13           13--------------------3
4--------------------12           12--------------------4
5--------------------10           10--------------------5
6--------------------11           11--------------------6
25-------------------25

I have everything the same as the instructions but I'm still getting the
error, to me it looks like the pc is not communicating with the board I
don't know...
Thanks,
Kurt

Hey Kurt,

On that cable, you want a "straight thru" parallel cable. What you have
indicated is a bi-directional "printer" cable.

See this site for some definition on DB-25s:

Hi Steve,

I believe that this is a "LapLink" cable not a "switchbox" cable.  Peter,
thanx for the pointer to the cable types.

A "switchbox" cable is also 25 pin male to male (like the cable that you
have), but the pins are passed directly through without any kind of
switching.

The Cable is wired with the pinouts:

1--------------------1
2--------------------3
3--------------------3
         :
25------------------25

Maybe we could continue this conversation off line and not use up PICList
bandwidth.  Please email me directly if you have questions about the cable
or if you have additional problems,

myke

Myke, Am I wrong, or a parallel transfer cable is different from a switchbox cable???

A switchbox cable is wired straight-thru, and the parallel transfer (did I heard laplink?) is wired in a special manner...

Hi Alexandre,

Yes, a switchbox cable is wired straight through as is most "Parallel
Transfer Cables".  I have bought cables with this label (here in Toronto
Canada) and used them without any problems.

I don't think Steve quoted what was on the package of the cable he was
trying to use.

Steve, if you're out there, do you still have the packaging?

Hello, both of you,
I could not resist to jump in... A "Parallel Transfer Cable" as use to
communicate between two pc's is not a straight through. They, however, come
with two DB25 male connectors. I have been making many of them before they
came available on the market. I could give you the wiring if you are
insterested.
