get a Picstart + in the UK?

I've found pretty much everyone charges around the same price. At best you
might save a fiver. If you have a good buying relationship with a
distributor who also handles PICs they might be willing to haggle but to be
honest it'll cost you more in time and phone calls than you're likely to
save.
The exception is if you go to one of Microchips training seminars where they
offer large discounts on kit. At recent seminars they also offer a
"crossgrade" where you can take in a programmer or devkit from a competing
product and get the equivalent kit from Microchip. Obviously there are some
very cheap programmers around for other processors so this is potentially a
very good deal indeed. Obviously you havve to pay for the seminar, but the
training sessions are worth the dosh anyway IMO, even without the special
offers.
