Free is always good - but it's not PIC compiler if that's what you
are thinking, it's for DOS PC stuff.

I've used it very little and I think it's OK. It's strictly ANSII so
you won't find clrscr() or graphics functions for example. You can
however pretty much all the libraries you want on the net.

No. Unless you run an 8088 emulator on the 877 ;)

Sure. You just need to write a C program that reads the 877's hex file
and properly drives whatever device programmer you're using to do the
job. :=)

Regards, Bob

Seriously, though, Pacific C generates code that only runs on the PC.
It's not a cross-compiler.

Again, no, but on the same website you will find the PICC Lite
compiler for PIC16F627, PIC16C84, 16F84 and 16F84A. This is a
freeware version of their commercial compiler and is limited to these
chips. The '627 is a great chip to play with, similar to the faithful
'84 but with way more features and cheaper.

Can the Pacific C compiler be used to program a PIC 877 ?

No, as Brent has already stated, it's a DOS based C compiler.  For DOS, on
PC's.  I guess you could code your own PIC programming software with it
though...
