'[PIC]:16F84 marking'

I just brought a PIC marked:

PIC16F84A-20/P

This implies a frequency of 20MHz but the data sheet I just down loaded
specifies a max operating frequency of 10MHz for the 16F84.

Do I have an old data sheet?

Yes. I believe the "A" is the latest revision and will do 20MHz

Yes, you need one that covers that specific chip. The "A" at the end
is significant, it is really a different die inside with different
characteristics, in general.

You can grab a fresh data sheet from:

Yes.  Your data sheet is, as you said, for the 16F84.  The part
you bought is a 16F84_A_.  The "A" part has a higher max speed.

The 16F84A comes in different speed variants (4 MHz, 20MHz) just as the
16F84 (4 MHz, 10 MHz) does. The "A" does not guarantee 20MHz operation.

The "A" by itself may not guarantee 20MHz operation, but the "-20" after the
"A" certainly does (or at least it better).
