Excellent Smithers..

Hi all,

Just did the last of the virtual car tests (9 in all)

120KPH head on into a power pole - controlled by a 16F877.

This was a public demonstration, so I took the liberty of getting some
digital shots of the days events.

I'll try to put the images on a web page tonight or tomorrow. Mind you,
there are a few beers flowing at the moment, so maybe the day after ;-}

I couldn't believe it, the circuit boards survived and the PIC's fired
up again ready for another go.

If you're in Oz, check out the news tonight.

I've done that one WITHOUT a PIC, (and with the help of an unexpected ice
storm!)

Way cool! I always wanted to work in the UL testing labs myself. <EG>

Well I've got to say that I was bl00dy impressed!  Was that remote
controlled or totally PIC controlled?
Who was it that said: "Men find something they like to do and then figure
out a way to get payed for doing it!" ?
I think this has got to be a classic example :)
I think I could probably have told you that we need more roadside barriers
without smakin a little blue car into a pole ;)

Very cool!  When are we going to see the video you saw during the test?
That would be scary.

I'll have to remember that :-)

Yes it has brakes. You can't see it in photo #2, but there is a
hydraulic ram connected to the brake pedal. Thats what the air bottle is
for in photo #6. You can see that the PIC has the brakes on in photo #9
just prior to starting.

I don't know if I can get a video of that, but it's not scary - just
stressful :-)

Now I'm afraid to use your romZap bootloader any more. Just think of what
happens if the software crashes!

And yes, you are *fortunate* indeed that the telemetry antenna did not blow
over during the test making the vehicle no longer respond to your control
input.  In that case, if it did not collide with the pole, it might have
accelerated up to 141.6KPH!!! causing a temporal breakdown of the fluxgate
capacitor thus sending the vehicle to who knows when!!!

Actually, if the data link is broken for more than 0.5 seconds, the car
shuts down.
