Hi Bob,

I am using MPLAB6.0 with the ICD2 and Microchip C18 v2.00 compiler with the
PIC18F452 and W2K. I have nothing but good things to say about this setup.
Everything works as advertised.With the ICD2 running on the USB port, I can
compile and download in less then 20 seconds. Also, you get real C-source
level debugging. For now, MPLAB only supports the microchip C18 compiler.
You can download a full working demo of the C18 V2.00 compiler from
microchip.The only thing missing from the C18 compiler is a printf library
function.
Regards

~Frank

Thanks for the info, Frank.

How much does the C18 compiler cost, or does the demo never expire?

I do use the printf function to write to an LCD, so I may have to figure a way around that if I do decide to go that route.

   can you tell me what are the limitations of the C18 demo? Does it work
for a limited time? How much the Full C18 costs?

   Thank you,

   Brusque

I can't understand why Microchip are charging for C18...

Goes against the grain of offering free development tools.

AFAIK, They have always charged for their C compilers.

Hi Brusque,

The demo c18 is a  full working compiler. I think it has a time limit of 30
days, but I'm not sure.

The non demo c18 is 499USD from http://www.digikey.com

Better to take a PCWH compiler from CCS:
- Better optimization;
- Support for PIC 12,14,16 and 18;
- Complete set of functions;
- US$ 425,00 for the full compiler and windows IDE;

As a note for clarification, the only compiler supported in MPLAB v6.xx is
MPLAB C18.  Other compilers will be added soon, starting with the Hi Tech
compiler in v6.10.  Optimization was the key focus for MPLAB C18 v2.00,
and an upcoming version v2.10 compiles even smaller code.

For full-featured, highly optimized, well supported compilers for the
Microchip 18xxxx parts, MPLAB C18 is well worth looking into.  As noted
here, the demo can be downloaded and used for 30 days.  This is the full
compiler and all libraries, supporting all PIC18xxx parts.
