There are many different PIC variants, so the number of projects that
specifically use the 16F84 is small compared to the total. By the way,
the 16F84 is obsolete. The 16F628 does more, costs less, and has the same
pinout.
If you are just starting, look at the 18 family. The 18F252 is a nice
starter chip. The 18 family is more flexible and easier to learn due to
reduced hassles with register banking and elimination of program memory
paging.

An oft overlooked resource is the piclist.com website
(http://www.piclist.com). There you will find beginner's projects, code
libraries, and checklists. Browse around there for awhile, you're almost
sure to find something you like.

... and in the hinderland Finland it is practically impossible for a
hobbyist to get them over the counter, as none of the component retail shops
I have visited here seem to stock it.
Apparently the retail outlets here are still filled with PIC16F84's so that
they aren't yet keen on the better cheaper chip.
Yes -- I can get it mail order, but the cost of ordering makes it more
expensive (hobbyists aren't ordering by the tube!).

If you understand Russian, may be you should try:
http://www.gamma.vyborg.ru
or
http://www.gamma.spb.ru
I won't be surprised, if these guys have their representative
somewhere in Finland.

searching with google for PIC16F84 will return you more than 2000 pages.
Why are you lazy my friend ?
Searching on the net it's a part from your project final note.

Thanks a lot to people that answer to me. I am from Greece and it is no such
a problem to found the 16f84. But it costs 8 euros! Is it cheap for "a
cheap" picmicro?
Has anyone a simple schemmatic for 16F628 programmer? I also would like to
hear about a project that you can programm gameboy cartidges with built-in
flash memory.
Thankxxx again to all piclist!

A quick look at Farnell :
16F84A, single quantity : aprox 6.5 EUR
16F628, single quantity : aprox 5.0 UER.
And the 16F628 is a *much* better chip !
Is there any reason *at all* to begin today with
the 16F84 ???

Yes: not being in a country where the local dealers read the piclist

NO
for small amounts, check http://www.voti.nl/shop, http://www.phanderso.com,
http://www.dontronics.com, ...
for larger amounts http://www.digikey.com, ....

And do read http://www.voti.nl/swp (which of course contains all of the
above links and much more).

But won't that cancel out when buying just a few chips? S/H from my shop
is just US 7.00, phanderson also has very low S/H costs.

In malaysia it cost RM 18.00. Buying power here is much lower here.
