hi all

I want to improve my pc based MP3 player, so when power is up I'll have a
message on the lcd. today I need to wait for windows to boot and then I can
send massages within the autoexec.bat file.
I want to put between the parallel port and the lcd display a pic that will
send messages while windows is booting, then when windows take over it will
stop/ignored and other messages will be send by the windows os.
can it be done? electronically and software?

block diagram of idea:

Port            Pic             LCD
*******                 *******
       *    ********   *       *
       *----*  *-----* *
       *----*  *-----* *
       *----*  *-----* *
       *----*  *-----* *

Definitely can...  Could even be made easier by making that pic a
serial->parallel converter.  Less wires would need to be run to the PIC
as a result.

Or if you just want it as an in-between, it would work just fine like
that too, relaying whatever you send it.

10x for reply

are there any diagrams for connecting them together? just connect 4/8 bit
signals ?

Well, honestly it would be whatever you would want, personally I prefer
the 8bit mode but it's up to you!

Easily done.  And if you use a very simple hardware trick, it will fit into
a 16f627.

The hardware trick is to use 4k7 or 2k2 series resistors between the PC and
the display's data and control lines (D7..D0, RS, EN) and connect the PIC
directly to the display.  The reason for the relatively low values of
resistors is to reduce the effect of the pull-up resistors inside the display.

While the PC is booting, the PIC drives the display with whatever messages
you want.  After the PC has booted, just have the PIC tristate the lines
going to the display.  Now the PC has control of the display.  You can use
one of the port RA pins to allow the PC to tell the PIC that it is ready to
take over.
