'[PIC]: beyond a PIC'

I have a project that I'm working on and I would like to take it a step beyond the PIC...it will be using a graphic LCD and the best conclusion I'm coming to right now is to switch to a more powerful processor (386, Dragonball, etc.) with more memory.

Can someone give me a good starting point in learning how to design something with a 386 processor?  I know there are a myriad of RTOSes available for the 386, but which ones are cheap and friendly?

I maybe way off course here but PICs will talk to graphic LCDs and as is shown in this months Circuit Cellar also to TFT screens.
