'[PIC]: USB-to-RS232 cable - suggestions?'

Hi,
Does anyone know of the existence of a fairly cheap Linux-compatible
USB-to-RS232 converter? I'm doing some smartcard software development with my
Wisp628 and a homebrew Smartmouse interface and I've just noticed that this
accursed PC only has one serial port (!).
Like I said, the cable needs to be Linux compatible, because most of my
smartcard testing and eval software is Linux-based. I'd prefer something I
could get from a UK source, e.g. Maplin, RS, Farnell, etc. I've found a few
nice USB-to-serial converters, but either they're incredibly expensive (GBP
65!) or not Linux compatible.

Thanks.

FT232? Note that the chip is made by a UK company! I sell a board
(USB-1) that you could interface directly to the UART pins of the PIC in
the Wisp628, after removing the MAX232.

Mental note: I realy must make an FT232-based USB-Wisp628!

Interestingly enough, the FT8U232 seems to be easier to get outside the UK,
despite the fact FTDI are based in the UK. Their UK rep is fairly friendly,
but IIRC they had a rather excessive postage fee - £13 IIRC. I think £13 is a
bit excessive unless the ICs are packed in gold-plated antistatic shipping
tubes :)
Anyway, I've just found a couple of USB-RS232 converters on Ebay -
"Manhattan" branded, based on the Prolific PL-2303. Allegedly supported by
Linux, too. £13 all-inclusive for a USB-to-RS232 converter doesn't seem too
bad to me. Then again, I guess someone's probably going to post a message to
the PICList claiming to have bought a USB-RS232 cable for $5 or something
like that ;)

Later.

Mine came in box that used ten pound notes for packing material.  Not being
good currency in my locale, I had to dispose of them in the rubbish bin.

Uh. Oookay. :P
Anyway, I've got my USB-to-RS232 converter on order - fingers crossed. If it
doesn't work with my Wisp, I'll be more than a little bit annoyed :-/

Now, for my next trick, I'm off to build a 6502-based computer. On a
Protoboard. Thank the Deities for EEPROMs and EPROM programmers :-/

And I would be interested, because it works on my desk with the
converters I tried.
