Does anyone know where to get a cheap (lower than USD15) USB to serial
DB9 (Female) converter ?  The reason is to use for programming PIC. My
notebook do not have a serial port.

If you find one be sure to tell us all!

And did you not pose that question a few days ago, or was that in
another forum?

What you need is an USB->serial adapter, sold in every computer shop for
some $ 50. Or a programmer that has an USB connector, which would save
the silly conversion from TTL to RS-232 (in the converter) and back to
TTL (in the programmer).

And BTW I am not sure all (simple) serial port programmers work OK with
an USB->serial adapter (hardware wise), nor whether your software will
be able to work with the adapter.

If you are near a Target dept. store in N. America; I've seen these on
clearance last week for $7.  Look by the PDA's.  --Also picked up a portable
CD-MP3 player for $25 too... :')

I think I paid about $20 or $25 for mine, running XP on a laptop with no
serial ports.  Works fine for the ISD module.  I'll have to see if I can
find out who the vendor was for it.

Please do let us know.

Just to verify we understood you right, you have:

1) Windows XP
2) Microchip ICD (original not ICD2) and working with
16F87X
3) Michrochip MPLAB 5.7
4) Some brand of USB to Serial adapter

If this is correct you have a found a way around a
problem many people, including myself, have been
facing.  Please let us know the brand of the adapter
you are using and if possible the vender.  Thanks.

-Eric

I can confirm this. We also have one programming station on a laptop (WinXP)
without a serial port. It works through a USB to RS cable, don't know the
manufacturer, but the type is UC232A. In the .INF install file, the
manufacturer is USB2SERDevices, device spec is SerialPort,
VID_0557&PID_2008. Just make shure you install it somewhere in the range
COM1 to COM4, as MPLAB won't go any higher. I think they are bought at
different locations, every time we see them, we take one with us. So we have
about 5 of them  lying around. It's just a grey or green cable with all the
electronics inside the DB9 connector, green ones are long, grey ones are
short. See http://www.bb-elec.com/product.asp?sku=UC232A&dept_id=145.

Regards,
Claudio

Claudio,

Thank you for confirming this.  I went to the link you
gave and found the mentioned product but drivers are
only listed for Windows 95,98,ME,&2000 not XP.  Do you
know which drivers you are using -- or are the driver
built in to XP?  If you are using the Win2000 drivers
this may explain why it is working, since the ICD
supposedly works under Win2000.

Just for the record, I am developing such a device as we speak.  The price
may run a bit higher, however.  When development is complete (mid January,
projected), I will notify the list under the [AD]: tag
