I got my TPIC6A595's in and the pinouts look a little different than those
listed below.
The names are straight from the datasheet. After the  equal sign is my
uninformed guess.

1 - DRAIN2 = bit 2
2 - DRAIN3 = bit 3
3 - SRCLR = reset line?
4 - G = ?????
5 - PGND = ground
6 - PGND = ground
7 - RCK = wired to pin 8 -> clock line
8 - SRCK = wired to pin 7
9 - DRAIN4 = bit 4
10 - DRAIN5 = bit 5
11 - DRAIN6 = bit 6
12 - DRAIN7 = bit 7
13 - SER OUT = used to cascade to other Shift registers
14 - LGND = wire to pin 15?
15 - PGND = ground
16 - PGND = ground
17 - VCC = +5v
18 - SER IN = data line
19 - DRAIN0 = bit 0
20 - DRAIN1 = bit 1

There are a couple that I am 'really' unsure about. All are questionable.
Once all this is right on the first, how do you set up the second? Are the
clocks and resets tied together?
Also, since these are DRAINX does that mean that when a bit is set it goes
to ground instead of +5v?

Thanks

The outputs are inverted: a logic 1 turns the output FET on which pulls the
output pin to ground.

I tie all the Pgnds and the Lgnd together - make sure the trace is as large
as possible.  I use the entire space between the 2 rows of leads for my
ground (trace is about 0.2" wide).

Be aware that the 4 variants of the TPIC6x595 have 4 different
pin-outs.  The two closest are the TPIC6595 and TPIC6B595.  For reasons I
mentioned in previous messages, I no longer use the 'B' version and use
only the TPIC6595 in our products.
