'[PIC]: Re-programming 18F452 without erasing EEPRO'

Hi!

I was hoping someone could tell me if it is possible to
re-program the program flash memory of an 18F452 without
erasing the data EEPROM.  And, if so, how to do it using
an ICD2 and MPLAB (and what version...)

I talked to Microchip last week, and was told that it
could be done.  However, now that I have my ICD2 and
MPLAB 6.00.20 running together, it doesn't work, and
*ALL* Microchip support people are not available until
Monday the 18th (training so that they can serve their
customers "better"...)

Thanks!

According to the programming spec it is certainly possible to erase and
program just the program memory, assuming code protection bits are set (i.e.
code protection is disabled). Whether or not any particular programmer
implements this is down to the individual programmer used.

Yes, the raw chip is certainly capable of this.  Whether or how this is
surfaced depends on the programmer and its software.

I don't use the ICD2, but for the Picstart+ there are checkboxes for what
you want it to write to the chip, although I've never tried those either.

I know that it is possible (for example, with a bootloader).
What I want is
  1) Can it be done via ICSP?
and
  2) specific instructions on doing it with an ICD2 and
     MPLAB 5.xx or MPLAB 6.xx.

Thanks,
  Bill

Yes.  All the flash based PIC's are programmed via the same pins anway,
whether in-circuit or not.

You cannot do it with 5.xx and the ICD2.  Inexplicably, support for
programming the different memories separately is not present, although it
used to work fine with the original ICD.  The expensive ProMate II
production programmer definately does not support this on any device that
takes more than one pass to program, much to my annoyance.

For the PICSTART+ under 5.xx, after you have enabled the programmer, select
menu item PICSTART Plus | Program/Verify.  The dialog box should have
checkboxes to enable programming of the various memories.  I've not used the
PICSTART+ under 6.00 so I can't comment, but hopefully that feature has been
included.

Yes this is possible, look under:
Programmer->Properties

Look in the hep file for the ICD2 there are some hints there aswell.
