'[PIC]: Programming 17C44'

hey-

I've got a bit of a problem.  I have a PICSTART Plus which needs the
firmware upgraded to be able to program the 16F876.  According to Microchip,
I need a 17C44 (at least 33Mhz) to upgrade the firmware.  I should just be
able to program a hex file that they provide into the 17c44 using the
PICSTART Plus.  However, my PICSTART Plus needs a firmware upgrade to
program the 17c44.  I have the 17c44 already and would like to know if
anyone could program it for me so that I can just use this chip rather than
having to order the firmware upgrade from Microchip.  I live in Seattle, so
someone in that area would be ideal,  but I have no problem mailing the chip
(along with return postage) to someone in the US if they are willing to
program it for me.

Thanks to anyone who can help me out.

-Russell

Just curious: what is the current firmware level in
your PICSTART Plus?

Okay nevermind.  I don't even have to upgrade the programmer now.  I figured
out I was doing something wrong.  However, if I wanted to, I didn't see the
17c44 listed in devices that MPLab can program.

The firmware version is 2.30.0 (where the current one is something like
3.10.0)

That's why I was curious.  The README file I have
for the PICSTART Plus says the 17C44 is supported
with version 2.01 and higher.

I thought MPLAB thru at least version 5 didn't need an upgrade to program
the 17C44.  What version are you using?  Version 5 is still available on
the Microchip web site.

Do it anyway.  Someday the ability to talk to archaic firmware versions
may dissappear.

Sorry Olin, but on this I'd truly have to disagree. I try to live under
the: "if it's not broke don't fix it" mantra. I wouldn't "upgrade" the
firmware until I needed to (by either the firmware used not being supported
anymore or a feature being needed that's present in a newer version of the
firmware). TTYL
