'[PIC]: Problems with Picstart Plus'

I am trying to update the 17C44 in my Picstart Plus. It still has the
original ver 1.20.00 PIC in it, and I am trying to program a new /JW part
with the code supplied in MPLAB V 5.31. The Picstart Plus initially fires up
and apparently blank checks the device, but then falls over with a
communication error part way through.
I suspect the problem is my new dual Pentium Windows 2000 Professional
system! Has anyone found a way around these problems?

Install MPLAB temporarily in a slower system (laptop or whatever) and
use it to upgrade your Picstart+.

:) Yes I was considering that, it is just a pain to set it up again. I was
also wondering if it might be the problem Roman goes on about with
capacitors in the power supply. However I have two of these supplies and it
happens with both. I opened one up and the capacitors do not look as though
they have been extreme heat cycled.
Still I guess the trick is to bite the bullet and deal with the other system
again :{}
But then I was already at the keyboard :)

Try replacing the caps? Mainly the 100uF 25v one
next to the heatsink. Mine was doing similar things,
like starting to program then stopping and giving errors,
it's to do with the increase in current when it starts
programming I think.

Hmm well I have done that on the slower system, but it still has
communications problems on my new machine. Do others have these
communications problems on fast processors?
