'[PIC]: Port from SX?'

I've got a program of substantial size (fills the flash) written in
Parallax SX-Key assembly language, running on the SX52. The lack of a
hardware UART has become problematic. Design review suggests that a fast
PIC might stand in for the SX52, because other functions currently
implemented in code could also be replaced with PIC hardware. So, I'm
wondering if there's a PIC assembler that's completely equivalent to the
SX-Key assembler. Parallax sold their PIC development tools to somebody,
right? Comments, anyone?

Mike,
Just an idea about he UART. Have you considered the MAX31000 It's a small
SPI based
full blown UART has fifo's etc and is easy to use... I had 8 of them hanging
on a single PIC and I'm sure the SX can do the SPI thing.
Not sure about the PIC assembler etc.

Hans,

There's an external memory bus in this crackpot design, so it's about
equally practical to use a standard memory-mapped UART chip. Problem is,
there's not enough real estate...

Actually a MAX3100 I suspect.
Digikey has them (only have QSOP 16 version in stock).
