$45? Whoooops! I will sell a kit for my Wisp628 programmer for $21 + $7 s/h
per order. It is an in-circuit programmer, without a power supply (draws
from the target circuit). But OK, it has some limitations, like doing flash

Tal,
I have used the P16pro with 12c508, 16F874,16F876, and 16F877 with no
problems at all.
The only trouble I had was searching the junk bin for a power supply with a
high enough
voltage.
Also, support for the 18F series as been released in beta.
I am patiently waiting for a few chips to arrive so I can test that feature.
Of course, if you use picallw software, you must register it to get
all the features available for all PIC types that are supported.

Skip the software, just get the P16Pro kit, and give
http://www.lpilsley.co.uk/ a try. Has software called "WinPICProg".
Really nice, seems slightly more modern than PICALLw software. The
website seems offline for a bit but it's been up. The author even fixed
a bug I found overnight and got me a new copy, quite excellent.

the P16PRO, probably I will get one if going in the P16PRO direction.
Regarding the software:
1. Is it true that programming 16F84 with the PICALL does not require
license (I think I read it somewhere) ?
2. Is there another software that works with P16PRO ?

I never gave it a thought until the P16pro was here and assembled. I thought
surely one of the dozens
of old "wall wart" power supplies in my closet would work. Most of them are
12Volt or less though.
I ended up buying a hugely oversized one at Radio Shack, just to get the
voltage I needed.
I did retire an HP printer last week though, and I noticed the power supply
for it is 30VDC,
so I guess I have another option, though 30 is the upper end of the
acceptable range.

Yes, according to the website. I have not tried it though. It did allow me
to program the
first 256 locations of a PIC12C508 without registration also. I thought it
great that I could
"test drive" with a simple program before paying for the registration.
Of course, if you'll be doing much PIC work, there are better choices than
the 16F84.
Just post a message to this list with "16F84" in the subject line and see
what happens!

I'm sure there are. I have not had experience with any others though. I

I'd have my hands full fixing my own Hard and Soft bugs. Given those
criteria, I
am quite satisfied with P16pro and Picall for Windows software.
One other option.. Look at the "picall" kit as well. It is more expensive
than the P16Pro,
but the price includes a PIC that is pre-programmed with the software key.
Software registration
is included in the price. Picall also supports more devices.
I have often heard of the P16Pro described as a "David Tait" style
programmer. You might want to
Google with "Tait PIC programmer". I did and got 10 pages of hits.
Finally, the "Standard Disclaimer". In my limited time working with PIC's, I
have seen MANY
options for programmers. Each seems to have it's own advantages and
disadvantages. I can tell
you that I'm happy with the choice I made, but I'd be a fool to say it's the
best choice. I haven't tried
any others, so I can't compare them fairly. I think there are many good
choices. You have to balance
your needs, budget, and patience against the choices available.

I am using PICALL software with Propic2 hardware and I'm very pleased with
it. It's programming very fast and it's working under any kind of Windows.
Whit the latest software from http://www.picallw.com you can programm 16f84 and
16f628 for free no more 256 bytes limit.
My advice is to buy the PICALL PCB not PIC16PRO because for the little price
difference you will be able to programm PIC's, AVR's, SCENIX's and serial
EEPROMS. It is only 43$.

The WinPicProg is available at
http://www.lpilsley.uklinux.net/winpicprog.htm and it seems
to support P16PRO (as well as a very flexible customization facility). Will
give it a try as soon as I get the P16PRO that I ordered.

Rewire a wall wart for 9V as a doubler (remove two diodes and add a
capacitor like the one already there). See ARRL etc for schematic.

I stayed out of the El cheapo discussion since you already had a programmer.
Now I'll step back in. Before you move on elsewhere here are my suggestions:
1) Get a few 16F628 parts. Here's my page that describes why:
