Checked there web site (messy and over-designed),
but could not find anything. Never mind, I can't
go there tomorrow anyway...

I'll be attending in Asheville, NC two weeks from tomorrow.
This will be my first Microchip seminar. I'm curious as to
what to expect, and also interested to see if there might
be any PicKits on hand for sale.
I'd like to hear from any others who have gone to this seminar
and would like to let me know what to expect.
Also, if anyone from the list will be attending the Asheville
seminar, let me know and I'll look for you there.
Thanks,
Lyle

Phil.,
I attended the one in Houston, Texas USA about a week or so ago.
Most of what they discussed I already knew. I did benefit from
about 10% of it though which justified my going. Unless you're
an absolute beginner, you'll already know most of what they teach
you.
But there are free door prizes and refreshements, so I'd go if you're
able.
Hope this helps you out.
Regards,
Jim

Well, I guess I don't classify as an absolute beginner - I've read most of
the PIC16C84 datasheet (that's how I learned to program PICs) and I've got
copies of all the MPLAB manuals, the Mid Range Reference Manual and numerous
datasheets.
You're probably talking to the only person who looked at a broken clock
radio and thought "I wonder if I can hook that up to a PIC"... :-)

Hmm... I can't really justify a 50-minute journey just for the little bit of
the seminar that will actually be of some interest.
Now where did I put that bag of lemons... I think it's time to build the
"LemonPIC WebServer" <GRIN>
Later.

No Pickits for sale, but they had one for a raffle/giveway at the end.
They also gave out a couple "coupons" -- 20% off list price on one of a few different dev tools (pickit, icd2, and a few others), and another for $100 off the Masters.
Cheers,
-Neil.

Lemme one-up you :-) .... PIC-controlled bathtub!
BTW, going to the Microchip seminar also let's you meet the local sales reps, FAEs, etc.
Cheers,

Went to a TI MSP340 seminar a few weeks ago. They ran their digital
clock/thermometer demo board off of 3 grapes!

Heh. I was amused at ESC. Microchip was touting their nanopower PICs
running some circuits off this big orange. (featured pretty prominently in
some ads, too, I think.) TI's booth had their MSP430 running off of some
tiny little grapes...
(I *THINK* it's all marketing. Current delivered probably has more to do
with electrode area than size of fruit, and I think they were both using
rather ordinary wires....)

Wow, the TI MSP430 seminar I went to last year used a couple pineapple
slices. They must be raiding the fruit buffet at their hotels before they
leave for the seminars... ;-)
BTW, I've completed a couple projects with the MSP430's now and I
like 'em. A lot.

The only thing that stopped me using them when I last looked was lack of an
I2C slave peripheral. Do you know if they have one yet?

Hello,
we will here also a seminar on 24th June, in Budapest. I will be there,
indeed! The dsPIC will be introduced.

I'm not sure. They have several new devices due out any time. I don't use I2C that much and usually as a master when I do. I've seen others complain about the lack of I2C master capabilities, so hopefully TI is listening!
I find the MSP430 and PIC families to be complimentary with the work I do. The MSP430's are better than PICs at some things (LCD, low power battery applications, analog signal processing). The MSP430 family also
has a fantastic timer system -- a little complex, but very powerful. I
definitely like programming/debugging with the MSP430 family over PICs.
I still like the smaller PICs for simple low pin count designs. I used
to use PICs almost exclusively for single-chip designs, but am finding
myself using them less and less.
I'm currently using several microcontroller families, mostly based on design complexity and speed/memory requirements:
1. PIC (least complex) 2. MSP430 3. Cygnal 4. Rabbit 2000/3000 (most complex)
Lately I've been split fairly evenly between MSP430's, PICs and Cygnal's parts -- but it could just be the nature of the designs I've come up against. I generally use whatever makes the most sense for a particular design. I guess I like a little variety too... ;-)

Went to the Santa Rosa, CA Microchip seminar yesterday and someone actually asked the Microchip rep when they will be demonstrating the Sonoma County wine county version of the Grape Clock. I wonder if it was someone from the piclist?

My father down in the basement, once cooked dinner by using an electrical cord with a nail on the end of each conductor and poking them into each end of a hotdog. Kind of smelled like burning flesh but it worked quite well.
