'[PIC]: MCP2510 Errata Sheet Predicament'

Hello all,

Amidst all the S/N ratio, OT tolerance and Admin related issues, a PIC
related issue:

I'm building an application with a PIC16F877 as a heart, and a MCP2510 for
CAN connectability. Now, normal operation with the MCP isn't very hard, a
bit of a steep learning curve, but oh well, I'm used to that in this field.

However, when trying to get my code polished and tough, I ran across the
MCP2510 Rev. AA Silicon Errata Sheet. In this wonderful document are 14
points with both minor and major errata's and their accompanying work
around. Most of them are covered or not applicable to our application.
However, one of those errata points remains unclear and possibly unsolved:
errata point #6.

Now, before I delve into the details of this errata point I want to ask all
people on the list to please give a sign if one would recognize the
particular predicament I am in. In short: I'm looking for an MCP2510 expert.

I've already turned to the CANlist, an excellent mailing list with huge
parties of CAN experts and novices, even people who contributed to the
development of the CAN standard. See
http://www.vector-informatik.com/canlist/ for this list. After much
discussion, we haven't come to a complete conclusion, partly due to the fact
this point of the errata sheet is ambiguous and partly due to the fact I
cannot test my changes yet.

I also turned to spam_OUTtech.supportTakeThisOuTspammicrochip.com, but as with any
.....tech.supportKILLspamspam@spam@whatever.com, I have my doubts as to the usefulness of that
action. Finally, I've turned to MicroChip's web board, but no luck here
also.

So, who is the MCP guru here, who can I turn to in these dark times of
mailing list doubts and community usability wonderings?

Best regards,

Claudio

P.s. As someone stated already: the fact the OT woes topic has been raised
has already solved the problem. Please don't fix something that isn't
broken.

I think it's time to get that dusty telephone out of the closet, plug it
back into the wall, and call up MCHIP's help line directly. You can at
least use the web to get the number off the website.   You'll get a
response pretty quick and can probably get to the hapless engineer who
wrote the erratta sheet directly and have him explain what he was thinking
(or smoking) when he wrote it.  .

It somewhat frightens me that no-one on this list has any experience with
this thing. Is CAN such a hi-brow excercise or am I just taking the wrong
road here? Oh well, I guess you're right. Now, how did the 'telephone'
thingy work, again?

I have used the MCP2510 quite a lot, but I've only recently rejoined the
mailing list and haven't seen the rest of this thread.  If you can forward
it to me I'll see if I can help.

Martin

I am subscribed to that list. However, after two weeks of messages, we
unfortunately didn't reach an conclusive solution. The tekst in the errata
sheet is ambiguous, no matter how many times one would read it over. We
solved some other issues but in some aspects, discussing it on that list
only made my understanding of the errata worse as more and more people added
their idea's about the interpretation, each one more and more
contradicting...

Claudio

Sounds like someone needs to talk to the Motorola design engineer to get the
'straight goods'.
