'[PIC]: Is it the future yet?'

Microchip has a tendency to announce new PICs _long_ before they are
available as "Future Products".

I have been waiting, it seems, at least a year for an 18F chip.

Now the 16F85 and 16F86 look real good.

Also, I'd like to get my hands on the 8 pin 18 series chip (although that
almost sounds like an April Fools joke - the 18 core is a bit much for 8
pins).

Does anybody have any idea what the typical delay is between announcement
and general availability for a new PIC?

Yea, Bob:

I have a water glass FULL of 18C452s because of a lack of an PLCC packaged
erasable part.
I begged, pleaded, tried to bribe, etc. to just get 4 F parts... No Joy.

Yes, I have the adapters to get to the DIP part, but the PC board has the
452s too close together
to adapt more than 2 out of the 5 on the board.  And certainly NOT 2 adjacent
parts!  Sigh!

Since Olin is no longer upstairs from me anymore, I can't even steal his ICE
2000 to go with mine!
Debugging a system with 29 PIC18C452s is a REAL challenge without erasable
(flash) parts.

Wow! What IS this machine with 29 18c452s? Part of the SETI project? My
largest 452 system has 1 chip on one board doing one part of the job and
one to 10 more each on separate boards doing identical stuff and sending
their data to the one different board.

The NeuroFocus brain scanner uses 452s for data collection and motion control.

Thomas: I think I held the record for a while when someone asked the
question of how many PICs in one system. My answer was 12.

So now I need to start crying, and hand my jeweled crown over to you. You
win... and <sniff> I wish you the best of luck... <sniff>
