I need to develop an 8 bits ISA board, probably with a 16F877 with slave PORTD. It's a ISA to RS-232 converter, any link to help me? No, I need to emulate a serial port but I also need to do some protocol change, so I need a PIC on it. Try this at Jameco. This board is an 8-bit serial ISA. I thought about it, however I wanted to connect the PORTD of 16F877 to the parallel port and use the "bit banging" technology to get 5 RS-232 ports (Tx, Rx, RTS, CTS). Certainly each of them should provide the FIFO queue (like 16550A does). The problem is however how to multiplex the data to/from 5 RS232 ports, using single 8-bit PORTD. Probably a special protocol using the "escape" characters would be necessary. Maybe someone could suggest any good solution... Why ISA->RS232 with PIC ? It can be done but the usual way is a NS16550(A) USART and a HCT688 address decoder (and a MAX232 or or other line interface). You will also have to write a driver for your OS so it is better if you stick with the USART register model and use standard drivers. You will also need a single open drain (or collector) driver for the interrupt line. Get a datasheet of a 16550 or a schematic of an old additional serial port for clues. Wojciech, if you are interested I can send you an ISA, 16bit expansion board made by Emulex. It has 1M ram and 80286 onboard. Two programable RS232 or 485 or VT xxx ( 6 different interfaces mode ). Full documentation. With this board you may add another two RS232 + four on your computer = six. Enough I hope. I think you'd save yourself a world of trouble (especially since intel wants to get RID of the ISA bus) if you can move the PIC and the protocol change to AFTER the rs232 port. Ie - use a magic PIC daughter card that plugs into the 1489 sockets or hangs off of the db25 port and has a special connector to get power. Modern laptops have USB ports, 127 Serial ports anybody :-) I have 3 on my laptop, COM1: and two on USB. Very helpful for running the ICD on one port and talking to the device under test on another.
