'[PIC]: ICD weirdness'

I'm having a problem getting my home-built ICD to work reliably.
Frequently it comes up showing a PCL value of FF hex. Nothing seems to
reset this value to 0. I've tried both reloading the program and using
power on reset from the debug tab in various sequences and
combinations.

With PCL 'stuck' like this, the error message "Error performing
requested operation" occurs whenever I hit either Run or Step.

The ICD sometimes starts off with a correct PCL value of 0 at reset.
In these cases, it runs and steps exactly as I would expect it to.

Has anybody else seen anything similar to this? Am I missing something
really stupid here?

Thanks, Bob

In the case of any ICD wierdness, my advice would be in the first
instance hit reconnect and check you get EST COMM or whatever it says,
then in the options window, hit update, and check that the to voltages
are about right.

Only this morning, I found a hairline short on a TQFP 16F874 like this
that I had missed by eye, because the MCLR voltage was reading about 6V.

Thanks for the tips, Kevin. On further troubleshooting, it looks like
I may have a hardware problem on my target board. I've got some more
digging to do but it may not be the ICD after all.
