'[PIC]: ICD modified'

by

I have just finished a modified ICD, see http://www.vitrum.cz/snail/icd.htm
It is build on a single sided board. Complete schematic, silkscreen and PCB
pictures are published, also PCB solder side postscript file and Eagle 3.55
schematic and board files are available for download. Enjoy.
I also considered offerring kits, those would include all the parts, PCB
and preprogrammed PIC16F876 to solve the egg-chicken problem. Will there be
any insterest if they are priced at $39? Let me know.

I'm just finishing a wirewrap ICD, but wish I had waited so I could
use your pc layout. Great work and nice of you to share it.
BTW, I briefly looked at the schematic on your page. I didnt really
check it much, but I noticed one thing that might be an error, or
maybe its a microchip error that you have fixed. Anyway, you have
R33 shown as 10 Kohms, but in the schematic I got from
microchip, its shown as 100 Ohms. ??

Thanks, it looks great! Last time I tried to get an ICD from Digi-Key they
were out of stock, I think I'll build one of these this weekend.

Selling kits has always seemed like a lot of work. You'll get a lot of
interest for free kits, though :-) Most people with money and credit cards
will opt to buy a Microchip ICD(if they can find one!).
Thanks again.
Cheers,
Bob

Hi Brian,

I just didn't like the idea that every project would have to provide some
50mA of spare power just for the few minutes (well, maybe hours :-) of
debugging. Since you need a PC anyway, I see no problem powering the ICD
from a wallwart.

or at

We discussed this earlier when MPLAB 5.00 was released and the idea of free
ICD appeared. The conclusion was that hobbyist on a budget wouldn't buy ICD
even for $159. Furthermore Microchip doesn't make money on development
tools (at the seminar they called them the necessary evil). And Microchip
can still benefit even from homebrew ICD, in the long run.
I was of course aware of this issue, but once someone decides to spin off
his ICD clone, he has to put the code in the PIC somehow. Will it be less
immoral if he does it himself?

Hi Don,
I believe both 100R and 10K are correct. If you have a look how RB6 and RB7
of the target are driven (signals are named RC3X, RC4X to ease up
orientation :-), there is 330R from the 'driving' pin and 10K to the
'sense' pin. ICD firmware undoubtly checks that the target does not
override applied signal levels. Since the R33 goes to the so far unused
RCX0 (supposed to drive target RB3), I guess the resistor value doesn't
matter at all. Even if the RCX0 is used in future firmware upgrades, the
sense pin will see correct level thru 100R as well as 10K resistor.

I thank to all, who have replied to my ICD post so far. I didn't mention I
am subscribed to the digest, so a carbon copy to TakeThisOuTsnailEraseME
spam_OUTiol.cz would mean a
faster response. But it was the Independence Day yesterday anyway, right?
