I am very new to PIC development so please forgive this basic question:
I want to play back prerecorded sound (wav) with the PIC. Does anybody
know which components I may need?

There is an example on Byte Craft's WEBsite in C (with source)
using a PWM to output sound from a wav file on a micro. The
wav file can be recorded on a PC and stored in ROM as part of
the application code.

A CCP module in PWM mode can be useful as a D/A.  See my HAL project as an
example of creating audio out from WAV data stored in the PIC.
