'[PIC]: External storage to PIC's.'

Hi.
I'v been looking at some different external storage to PICs in
the 16F series. I'v looked at the Microchip EEPROM variants
and the FRAM's from Ramtron (very interesting b.t.w).

What I'v not found so far, is if there are some ordinary RAM
devices with a serial (e.g. SPI) interface. Anyone seen anything
like that ? Have to be "static RAM" i supose. From 8 to 32 Kbytes
would be just fine.

Best Regards

People keep looking for something like this.

If I made one using a pic and some dram, and put smt parts onto a little
pc board with a few wires coming off it would it sell for $10 a piece
(say 4MB)?

Hobbiests might buy it, but commercial users would likely spend the
extra time and money with a bigger pic and regular dram.  I doubt I
could get the volume to get a very low price, though the holy grail
would be two cobs on a double sided board, about the size of a large to-220.

What do you need the dram storage for?  Why is static memory not an option?

Well, I wasn't specific about "D" or "S" -RAM, it just don't have to be non-volatile
as the FRAMs or EEPROMs. Static RAM is an option.

Do you mean that there *is* some SRAM that works more or less (regarding
the "interface") as the FRAMs or EEPROMs ?

Hi,

As you seem to want serial accessed ram then I don't se any
why not use the FRAM's, I mean the write time would be the same either way ( unless you have an very fast serial i/f).
And for bonus it's non-volatile.
Anyway if you still are looking for serial 'ram' chips,
look at:

or perhaps dallas ( maxim ) has something you can use ( and at an price
to :) )

I'v decided to take a closer look at the FRAM's from Ramtron.
I ordered a sample of the FM25640-P type (8k byte, 8-pin DIP,
3-line SPI interface) from the Ramtron web site last week, and
got, not only one, but -4- of them today. Delivered by DHL over
the weekend from the US to Sweden. Excellent service !!

I'd be glad to share my findings if there's any interest from the list.

Best Regards

Maybe I'll also try it with 16F628 and/or 16F670 using bit-bang.
I'll probably also try a MCP3208 (8-chan, 12-bit ADC) on the same
SPI "bus".
