'[PIC]: Dead compact flash card!'

I've been using a CompactFlash card to store data in a project I'm working on, it was working correctly, I ws able to read from and write to it with a PIC, I then unplugged it from the board and plugged it in to a CF card reader (for a PC) and now the CompactFlash card no longer works, the PC does not even recognize that the CompactFlash card is present.  Does anyone have any idea as to what could have caused the CompactFlash card to stop working?

When I unplugged the CompactFlash card it was not chip selected but the board did have power.

It is connected using a proper CF card connector, that has longer pins for the power, these things are meant to to pluged in and out while powered, I just don't understand why its now dead!

Perhaps Mark (Samuels) can help, he seems to be the CF guru! :-)

Cheers

Graham

Try formatting it? In my experiences with SD/MMC cards, playing with it in
raw mode often destroyed the formatting. If you are on Win 2K/XP, see if it
shows up in the Disk Management Console.

Cheers,

Ishaan,

It shows up in the Disk Management Console, but as unreadable. I can't see it in Explorer to format it  :-(

Is it dead?

Cheers

No.  If the disk management console can see it, then it's usable.

Repartition it first (use disk management, set partition type to
fat[12|16|32] or whatever you want it as)
Then it'll show up as an unformated disk in explorer.

I don't have a Windows computer handy right now, but I believe you can
format a hard disk from the Disk Management Console, so you should probably
be able to do that for CF too. I'll see if I can do it with my CF
reader/WinXP at home later tonight and get back to you.

Good luck!

Or stick it in a camera and format it in there, if you've got one of
course!
