'[PIC]: Carmon - Almost Final Update'

Just in case anyone is interested I've made another update to my Carmon
project.
I've pretty much finished the project, everything is working as it should
and the software is at the point where I'd consider it "done". Of course
software is NEVER really done, you just give up on it... :)
Anyways, the project is in the car and is capturing data, found a few minor
bugs in the first few days of actual use but now everything appears to be
working fine.
I'll make the project "complete" after a few more weeks of real world use.
Oh, don't worry, got another project planned! :)
Anyways, here is the link in case you'd like to see more, added some more
pretty pictures! :)

Enjoy! TTYL

Not to throw a spanner/wrench in the works, but have you considered
interfacing with the OBD II connector and monitor the engine along with
everything else?

Since the PIC is full (with regards to the compiler I used) I can't add any
more code to do this sort of thing. With that said, yes, that is my final
plan.
My way around a full Carmon PIC, once my testing of Carmon is done, is to
start a new project that only monitors elements in the car, i.e. speed,
throttle position, injector pulse width, brake, rpm, interior temp, exterior
temp, engine temp, etc.
I won't be using OBDII since my car doesn't HAVE OBDII, instead I'll simply
tie into the signals directly (I've done it extensively before). I will do
this with a new "box", that is inserted in-between the GPS unit and Carmon.
It'll monitor the serial line, and when it senses a break in transmission
from the GPS, it will insert it's own sentence. That is why all the software
I've written is very selective at what it looks at and ignores everything
else, that way I can change GPS units, or add my own custom sentences and
the only issue to overcome is the added storage space.
In fact, Carmon can handle a continuous 4800 stream, so as long as the GPS
output plus my output doesn't go over 480 characters per second I'm OK! :)
Carmon has also been tested at higher serial speeds, so that is also an
option if the need arises.
As for this new box I'm still at the preliminary planning stage. I have
some "interesting" ideas as to how far I can go with it, I might just keep
it simple and create a third box to do my REALLY fancy stuff (hint: it'll
use a 512 colour LCD panel).
Anyways, I won't start that project for a few weeks at least, my schedule
is pretty packed, but at least it won't be as involved as Carmon was (which
took me a few years to finish, mostly because it's specifications changed so
many times, initially it was to use a laptop hard drive and was to be
programmed exclusively in assembly).
