If you really want to learn to programming, I would suggest an ANSI compiler (MPLAB-C18 and IAR are the ones available for 18Fxxx) and A nice ANSI C book like "Kernighan-Ritchie: The C Programming
language" ISBN 0-13-110362-8. Learning ANSI C is always a good idea.
