Very true. If you already know C, then it's silly to read a whole book just to learn 1 or 2 new things about how to use a new compiler. If you really want to learn to programming, I would suggest an ANSI compiler (MPLAB-C18 and IAR are the ones available for 18Fxxx) and A nice ANSI C book like "Kernighan-Ritchie: The C Programming language" ISBN 0-13-110362-8. While I agree with the other's that learning C for the PIC is best done after you have a foundation in C, there are some books that do deal specificly with the various variants of C for microcontrolers. Here are some places to start: http://www.ccsinfo.com/newtopiccbooks.html http://www.devrs.com/pic/docs.php I actualy have a copy of "PIC C - An introduction to programming the Microchip PIC in C by Nigel Gardner". When I first started with PICs and C I refered to that book more than to the compiler manual. It's kinda old now (pre-windows), but I first learned C from a book called "C programming using C++" by the Waite Group. Excelent read, I still keep it on my shelf.
