Hi all,

I have a friend in the US who wants to get into PICs. He is based in
San Jose.

Where can I send him for the best deal on a PICStart+?

TIA

Sean

Thanks Tim,

What am I doing wrong? I tried searching for "PIC", "PICStart",
"Microchip + Programmer", "Development" and nothing comes up. Oh, I did
find a power supply for a PICStart+

Regards,

Sean

Wierd.  I didn't see it listed by itself either.  I looked it up in the
paper catalog and there's a "Picmicro MCU IN A BOX" kit -- part 46WX3137.
It's listed around $408, so it must come with something else as well (I'd
hope anyway).  All thats listed in the description is the picstart
programmer, software, and some beginners pic books.  Digikey has them in
stock for $199 which is still kind o' steep.  You can get one at at a
discount ($100?) at the microchip classes if you can wait for one to come to
your area.

I'd suggest looking at the Galep 4 general purpose programmer, or one of the
newfound electronics (warp13?) programmers.  I purchased an earlier picstart
clone (reaper) from newfound and it worked pretty well.  I use my galep (3)
more often now .  If he's just starting out you might send him a bootloader
programmed 16f877 to tinker with until he decides.

come up on google)

Hi Sean,

They are often available on eBay, and there is one there right now,
presently at $70.  The seller says he has two new ones, with firmware v.
1.20 (which was current around 5 years ago, as I recall).  The link to the
auction page is:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1782590280

There is also a new 17C44-JW with the current PICSTART+ firmware (3.00),
presently at $11.51, which the buyer of the PICSTART+ might be interested
in.  (Okay... I admit it -- I'm the one with this for sale.)  The link is:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1781213531

I also have a selection of Flash PICs and other goodies at
http://www.glitchbuster.com that your friend might find useful.  I'm only about 200
miles from San Jose so he would get his order within a couple days, and I
think he'll really like the prices.  I enjoy helping beginners, and would be
glad to assist any way that I can.

Go to http://www.newark.com  and search for Microchip P/N: DV003001 or Newark P/N:  12C1785

Newark has them for $199.00 & they are STOCKING 57 OF THEM.

Hi Randy,

That $70 bid and $11.51 bid was me!

I find eBay not real practical for people like us here in Aus. First
you have to deal with the terrible exchange rate at the moment, and
then *most* sellers will not ship outside the home of the free and land
of the brave. :-)

But I figured my mate is in the US, so if I am successful I'll just pay
by PayPal and get them shipped directly to him. I might even earn some
brownie points on my eBay rating! :-)

Thanks,

Sean

I got mine from Digikey.  Prompt service and they called me a week later to
make sure I was happy.

Hi Sean,

Small world!!  If you win the bidding on the firmware chip I'll be glad to
send it to your mate, and will also be pleased to give you your first eBay
feedback!

My shipping within the US is a flat $1.85 for any number of PICs and
components, so if you get the firmware, he could get any other items he
needs without additional shipping.  In addition to PICs I have quite a few
of the other items he might need if he's starting from scratch.

Thanks for bidding!

Randy
