Has anyone bought the $99 "ICD SIMPLE SUITE DEBUGGER MODULE" and can tell
me what's in it? It's a Microchip product, but other than that I don't
know anything about it.

Thanks,

Bob

Bob:

Microchip promo: can buy it (from them or digikey http://www.digikey.com ) for $99
and this comes with a Pic16f877 and a Pic16f876!
("Includes: MPLAB ICD Module, PIC16F876, PIC16F877, Hook-up cables, MPLAB
IDE software, Instructions ")

Also Professor Anderson has the same device without the Pics for $89, can
buy from him or at Amazon.coms Z-Shops (no Pics included):

I've only had a little time spent on my unit - just picked it up. So far -
for the money - it is great.

I got mine about a week ago.  It came with this:
Tech library CD
MPLAB CD
Hardcopy MPLAB ICD User's Guide
Hardcopy MPASM User's Guide
Hardcopy MPLAB IDE, Sim, Editor User's Guide
Hardcopy MPASM and MPLINK quick ref guide
Serial Cable
Modular Cable
Errata sheets, poster, etc.

The sad thing is I can't get it to work.  I went over everything many times.
Everything checks out.  Self-test OK.  Program a chip then verify it and I
get verify errors in every location.  Blank the chip first then program it.
Same thing.  I think I may have got a bum unit.  Anyone else have problems
with these?

I have 2, both work fine.

What are you using as a power supply?

Eight AA battery powerpack.  That feeds into a 7805 and four caps on the
breadboard.  I get 5.03V.  When I have the ICD hooked up MPLAB shows a VPP
between about 12.9 and 13.1V.

The $159 package consists of serial cable to MPLAB ICD main module and then via a 9" tel connector to a header which carries the target PIC to a PCB protoboard with some LEDs, pot, switches.

It appears the $99 package includes all of this less the protoboard.

We took a bit different approach in eliminating the "carrier" and using a tel terminal to breakout the leads to connect directly to the target on your breadboard.  Thus, connection is simply five leads to your breadboard.  I don't ship the MPLAB CD and software as by the time you get it, its usually hopelessly out of date and all of this is readily available from the Microchip website.  We use the same ICD Main Module, not a clone.
