I've just downlosded the latest MPLAB and at 30mB its quite a
struggle on a dialup connection. However, I wasted my time as it
won't run on windows 95. What was the last issue of MPLAB that
would ?.

IIRC 5.7

MPLAB Archives (in chunks if you can't bear another big d/l)

6.x is not for Win95. You know that 6.x is a completely enhanced and
much better environment ? Save that file you downloaded. If it was me
I'd upgrade Win to make work easier

Amen !

As the readme file says (that you could have read
before downloded the complete kit...)

Possibly some V5-thing, *but* you will miss support
for a lot (all) of the newer PICs, so you'd better
think about the OS platform you are using ! The IDE
is also better in V6 I think, but I know others
that don't...

Besides, not even Microsoft has been supporting
Win95 for several years, I think.

The V6.3 version is a lot faster and seems to be cleaner
to use. It has some interface changes which take a bit
of getting used to but overall it is a nice package.

As for OSs - I have V 6.3 running quite nicely on
Win-98, Win-98 2nd Edition, Win-ME and Win-2K. As
you probably already know, you are unlikely to be
able to install Win2K or Win-XP on your machine,
and I would try to avoid Win-ME.

Win-98 (2nd) is a fairly straight forward upgrade from
Win-95 and a whole lot more robust and more reliable.
That having been said, the problem is getting a copy,
since Win-98 in all of it's forms is obsolete.  There
are suppliers out there who have old installable copies
to sell - usually at a good price.  If I run across the
name of one of them I will post it here.
