'[PIC:] Using ITU Tech programmer under XP?'

Hi all.
I just replaced our 8-y.o. PC with a brand-spanking-new one, and now my old
ITU Tech PIC programmer doesn't work.  It plugs into the parallel port and
worked fine under W98, but there's something wrong with this newfangled XP.
I tried changing the parallel port type in the BIOS, but SCP wasn't one of
the choices, and none of the others had any effect.
Is there some software out there that makes XP behave like '98 as far as the
parallel port goes?  Or perhaps some newer PIC programmer software that is
compatible with the ITU programmer?  Or some other option?  Thanks in
advance.

Hi Michael,

This is sort of a long shot...

I'm not sure if Chris Sakkas used Jan Axelson's original 'INPOUT' DLL to
access the parallel port on the ITU programmer he developed, but if he did
you just might be in luck.

Do you have the original software for the ITU programmer?

If so, do see this file anywhere in the software setup directory?:
       INPOUT32.DLL

If you do, LOGIX4U has created a new INPOUT32.DLL for Win XT/2000/XP which,
if the ITU programmer uses this DLL, would allow your programmer software to
run on your Windows XP machine without ant further modifications. This new
INPOUT32.DLL also works on Windows 98. I can send you this file if you need
it. The LOGIX4U web site looks like it has expired.

Thanks for the reply, Ken, but unfortunately, there's no inpout32.dll
anywhere.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone else here use the ITU programmer?

Hi Michael,

Check out http://www.dontronics.com

Don may be able to help you with a solution -- worth a try.
I think there is some mention on his web site regarding software that works
with the ITU hardware.

Sadly, Chris Sakkas died circa 1998. He was way too young and was a great
person to have in the engineering community.

Good luck in your quest -- hope you can get it working on Windows XP.

Best regards,

Is there anyplace else? The above site points to

http://www.logix4u.net/inpout32_source_and_bins.zip

which has been taken down because the domain name
has expired. Bummer.

Hi Jim,

Attached is the INPOUT32.DLL that LOGIX4U (Raygon Perunad?)
created as a Win NT/2000/XP upgrade to Jan Axelson's original
INPOUT32.DLL.

I know it is not magic, but it sure is awesome to see LOGIX4U's
INPOUT32.DLL breathe new life into software (that uses
INPOUT32.DLL) that normally would not run on a Win XP machine --
just by upgrading the DLL and nothing else.

I realize that this is not the only parallel port I/O DLL out
there, but both Jan Axelson and LOGIX4U did a great community
service by releasing these to the public -- my hat's off to both
of them! Thank you very much.

PICLIST:

Sorry if I've upset anyone with regard to uploading a file of
this size -- I try not to upload very often, but there always
seems to be people in need of interfacing PICs to the parallel port.

Best regards,

Ken Pergola

Sorry for providing you with a bad link. Programmers Heaven usually
has valid ones.

Just do a google search for the terms "inpout32.dll" and "download".
That's all I did. IIRC, there were several hundred hits. At least one
of them should work. :=)

I have the ITU programmer, though I don't use it much anymore.  It is
essentially a clone of the classic "Tait" design, and anything that works
with a tait programmer should work with it as well.  Back when I was using
Win98, my favorite software to use with it was the "pp" programmer.  It
only burned the memory locations that had been changed, so for development
revisions it was extremely fast (much faster than the software that came
with the ITU programmer.   This has been superceded by another programmer
called "FPP", which was also written by David Tait.  You can pick up a copy
here:

http://people.man.ac.uk/~mbhstdj/piclinks.html

In the documentation for this programmer it explains how to use it under
WinNT/XP.  I teach a course in embedded programming here and a couple of
years ago I used this as the programming software for the course.  I had
the students build a stripped down Tait programmer on their breadboards and
use FPP to do the programming.  It worked under both Win2K and WinXP.

Best of luck with your project.

John Hansen

That's what I tried first. Most of the links were to the "early"

version (95/98) and not XP. The links that I got that had the
new version, all ended up linked back to the logix4u site.

To Ken : Thanks.
