Hello All: I'm looking for an assembler for PIC for Windows. I think most people use MPASM, but it doesn't support the 16Fxxx series (except for 16F83/4). However, if you are using a slightly older version of Windoze, MPLAB won't install unless you have at least version 5.5 of Internet Exploder installed. Don't know if you go after only MPASM whether you can get away without IE, but without the MPLAB you're missing out on a whole lot. Well, MPASM is one of the tools that MPLAB calls "under the hood" to build your application. Hi, I think http://www.tech-tools.com is a worth of a look. They took the Parallax assembler which offer a nice alternative against classical MPASM, so I use it extensively (the BTFSS/BTFSC are not my best friend, but JB/JZ/JC are). And they will probably intruduce more problems the they will solve. JB/JZ/JC aren't PIC *instructions", right ? So they must have been implemented as macros or something, introducing yet other "interesting" issues a bit to early in the learning process, IMHO. Stick to MPLAB for the time beeing... I agree that in terms of the current cost of DASD it's not a big deal. I sort of suspected, though, that someone who had a version of MPLAB that didn't support more recent PICs may well be using a 486 or something and might find 134 Mb to be a lot. With my PIC Elmer course I exchange email with folks from all over the planet, and there are a lot of places where PC's (and disk) aren't as cheap as they are here. It does susprise me to find PIC hobbyists in places where a 20 gig drive can cost a month's pay, but I guess people are driven to learn everywhere. Gotta admit, I didn't really study OP's post to get a clue as to where he might be. I was reminded recently that some people (students / hobbyists) with old machines have problems with large discs. Some of these machines max out at 2GB per disc and and some others at 8GB per disc. Sure, but you also get the option to install only those bits you actually want, so you do not have to fill the thing out to the maximum install, so at this stage you do not put down the promate, ICD, PS+ etc files. Getting off thread, but, MOST PC's will allow larger than 2GB or 8GB HDD by using software provided free by the disk manufacturer. Certainly Seagate and Maxtor do this. While some now extremely venerable PCs do not support LBA, these would be getting extremely antique, even for students. Depends on country of course. In NZ a 386 is a throwaway item (I'm still using one as a video tape record keeper by my TV) and a 486 is largely the same. Pentiums under about 150 MHz are not considered useful for much. If you go to the Microchip site *right now* and search for "MPASM" you will find a download named "MPASM Assembler" dated 7-21-03 that does not support the new 16Fxxx series. It is a standalone version. I found a more updated one off Google. If you don't believe me, go download it for yourself! But, thank you any way for the information. Hi, don't worry, the user may continue to use the uChip mnemonics. BTW they are built-in macros imho. Of course, for a beginner it may or may not have an advantage. I prefer it due to compactness, both on source program side and resource usage (the DOS compiler is less, than 20 kByte, and the compile time is practically zero). On the other hand, the PIC beginner may have experiences with x51 series. It was the reason why this kind of language was been produced.
