1)       Is there in PicListLand any user of the PIC-ICD2 clone board
manufactured by Olimex (http://www.olimex.com <http://www.olimex.com/> ) ? I would
greatly appreciate any feedback about compatibility with the original ICD2
board from Microchip.
2)       Is it legal to clone ICD2 as Olimex has done ? Is this board a copy
or an emulation of ICD2 ?

Thanks !

Joan

I've used the Olimex ICD-2 board for several small projects.  I've never
had any problems with it.  It integrates seamlessly into the latest version
of MPLAB.  I've never used Microchip's ICD2, so I'm not really qualified to
compare them.  In my opinion the 6pin header that Olimex uses is easier to
deal with than Microchip's 6 conductor modular connector (RJ-11, RJ-25??).

That's a statement, but not exactly an answer :)

I had a discussion with one of the legal people about trademarks etc.
Micreochip doesn't want its good name besmirched, so generally its not
legal for Olimex to say "ICD2" whenn they refer to their version.

However, Microchip is in the business to sell chips, not ICD2s. Olimex
is supporting Microchip in that their equipment helps Microchip sell
chips. So its unlikely that Microchip will care.

Microchip might earn its living selling chips, but explicitly do not
allow you (me) to make a CD with their datasheets or MPLAB. What I
wonderd was whether it was legal to use their ICD2 firmware.

Related: In the sources of the PICkit firmware is stated 'legal to use
on Microchip products only'. Now who can make sense of that: when I make
a PICkit clone it will certainly use a Microchip PIC, but the rest of
the hardware is mine. Is this within the above clause (allowed) or not?

Does this include the USB, or does it do only serial?
