Thanks to all, but I forgot to include details... the 5 computers are all pre-loaded with Windoze 98 2nd Edition and I will be using dial-up account (56k) to connect to the net. Also, I would like to use freewares as much as possible... Is it alright not to be to much concern about security since I will be using the firewall of my ISP.... Regards, Allan I want to network 5 computers and share internet connection among them... what advises can you give me to avoid problems in getting it to work. I want to do it in the cheapest but reliable and stable configuration possible.. What brands (nic, hubs) do you recommend ( the most cost effective) ? Any url's, links to tutorials about the subject will be most welcome...

I use a 486/100 as a firewall and proxy server with linux, and use connectd to dial-out from ANY windows machine, it's like using dial-up and it's transparent to users. It's using Red-Hat 6.0 (kernel 2.2) with ip-masquerading and ipchains for security, I blocked all ports up to 1024 and disabled all services I don't use don't forget the 6000 it's the X server. With ipchains I can log all attacks and believe me, there's a LOT of port scanning. Pretty easy to configure. I have a dial up account that is typically open 15 to 20 minutes 3 or 4 times per day. It was a networked WIN 98 computer with unlimited file sharing enabled. A worm that was randomly pinging IP's installed itself on my machine and began using my machine to start pinging other IP's that it could get into. Fortunately it didn't do any damage other than slow down the rest of the applications that were running to a crawl. But my casual attitude may have been responsible for others being infected with this nuisance. Take reasonable security precautions. While you are online you are just as vulnerable as the guy down the street with the broadband connection. Mark Walsh

After you have your hardware setup, a hub, cabling, and TCP-IP...... I would simply use the little known internet sharing driver that comes with WIN98SE. If your worried about hackers, use it with VPN, also included. Very simple to set up. You very simply install the virtual adaptor under networking on the PC with the modem, and set all your other computers to use DHCP. Then under internet options, set to use the lan for the internet connection. I've used wingate, winppp, and winproxy. They are all more complicated than this. Winppp is the easiest out of the three if you don't have WIN98SE. I have three machines running this way, and even my Linux machine can share the connection! Craig {Original Message removed}

Along these lines, you might be interested in this: http://www.freesco.org Basically this is a very stripped down linux distro (fits on a 1.4 mb floppy) and runs on a 386 dx with 8 meg or better (no harddrive!), net card, modem. You can set this up as an ethernet router; dial in/out box, printer server, limited web server, etc. It's very easily set up via scripted menus. Cheapest solution... use the Win98 SE built-in Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). Under Windows Help->Index type in Internet Connection Sharing You still need to put in a LAN card in each computer and a HUB, put 10Mbps type are pretty cheap nowadays and more than adequate for most apps.
