'[OT] piclist.com archive is better'

I did some work on the archive at piclist.com

- Ran the optimize wizard on the SQL server. Wow! Did that make a
difference. All the listings of posts (by day, month, year, thread, author,
etc...) are now much, much faster.

- Added ISO-5589 decodeing to the subject and author. That includes Q and B.

Just had to brag...

Forgot to mention: I also found a 64MB PC100 and added that to the 128 the
SQL server was running on. It seems to have made a difference... ...but more
is better right? Anyone got any 64's or 128's they want to donate?

I might be able to scrounge up some old PC100/PC133 DIMMs... 64s as I recall.

You might be better of checking eBay though - last I checked some
places were selling several 128s for about $10 per lot. A small batch,
a copy of Memtest86 and a few hours should net you at least a couple
good modules.

Running SQL server (presumably under an NT-based operating system)?  Absolutely!  But it depends how much you
need - more is useful but it doesn't always make a huge difference.  It becomes a real problem when you "run
out" of memory.

I once had a client who ran a daily process to add data to a SQL server database, and one day instead of its
normal 3 hours, it took 26 hours to run (a bit of a problem for a daily job!).  It turned out that the program
checked every incoming record to see if it had already seen it before on that run, and it kept the data in
memory as it did so.  Once the whole lot wouldn't fit into memory at once, it all had to be paged out to disk
then back in *for each new record*!  Obviously a redesign of the program would have alleviated the problem,
but actually it was cheaper to bung in some more memory.

I'll have a look round -  these are 132-pin SIMMs, aren't they?

SQL SERVER:
They are the big suckers... The 168's? For the SQL server, Gateway says it
is this one:

System Serial Number: 0016118689

Motherboard Part Number: 4000510

Number of Memory Slots on Board: 3 (3 banks of 1)

Maximum Amount / Type of RAM that can be Installed:
384MB  SDRAM, PC100

Type of Memory Modules (shipped):
128-MB 100Mhz 64Bit 4-clock CL=2 SDRAM UNBUFFERED DIMM

Pn       Description           Price  Status
3053816  128 MB PC100 SDRAM  $ 74.99  OUT OF STOCK

WEB SERVER:
Now, the web server was custom built by M Adam Davis (and he did a nice job)
with a GA-6VEM Socket 370 motherboard and the VT8601T / VT82C686B chipset.
It has two 168 pin slots, one slot currently has 256M in it. The manual says
it will take up to 1G but I guess that is with two 512M chips. It supports
PC-100/PC-133 SDRAM at 3.3V only and it says the memory size can vary
between the sockets.

I wonder if a batch more memory would speed up the search engine?

If someone actually decides to send some memory to me, email first to let me
know what you have and I'll take the best offer and say thank you to all...
No point in sending me more than I came use.

And I would be very grateful...

James.

I've had a PC133 Sync CL3 (it'll underclock itself to PC100 fine in
your case) 128mb chip sitting in my cupboard for quite a while now, it
was for a mini server, but if I ever get round to building one, I'll
build one with DDR now, so you're welcome to it if you would like it.
However, since I'm in the UK I'll have to send it via airmail, so it
may take a few weeks to arrive.

If you want a picture to check it'll fit beforehand, let me know.

Cheers,
Jamie.

I find stuff takes about a week to get to (say)
California by airmail from here.
