'[OT] Urgent, Video Generator for PIC micro'
2000\06\06@234601
by
David Huisman
Could someone please recommend a suitable Video Generator/OSD IC that can be
driven from PIC.
We would like to put Composite Video in, add text and have composite video
out with text/video mixed.
The other requirement is that the character set in the device must be
programmable from the micro as we mirror image the display at times and need
to mirror image text also.

I have used STV5730 from SGS Thompson.
Got some starter code you can have if you like.

We hope to have a SimmStick in the coming months that will do just this
David.
As you have designed a SimmStick for your RF modules, i thought I better
let you know so that the project isn't doubled up on.
And yes it uses the chip Tony was talking about.
We are just playing around with the two crystals/software and PAL/NTSC
standards.

The STV5730A. See http://www.stv5730a.co.uk for details, datasheet,
project board and demo code. This topic comes up regularly on this list
and various other pic related resources exist on the web for this chip.
Do a search on altvista or yahoo and the Piclist archive for "STV5730"
and this should bring up at least two other sites with free code and
hardware descriptions.

The character sets for chips of this type generally are fixed in ROM.
This is certainly the case for the STV5730A.

Thanks for the reply,
The problem with the STV5730 is that the character set is pre-programmed in
ROM. We need to choose and alternate character set which writes characters
backwards for when we have the monitor in mirror mode.
We also know of the UP6566 from NEC but are looking for video in-video out
solution first.
Do you know of any that would meet the requirements as in our original post
?

Sick idea, grab a raster line (digital or A/D) and output it backwards in
hardware?
Seems like there ought to be a way to do this with a long piece of
unterminated coax, and a hybrid, but I think that's still FIFO, and you'd
need LIFO.

David,
The video reversal is already taken care of and is in use.
We are now wanting to add text to the video (which we can also do without a
problem). The problem is that when we reverse the monitor, the text also
reverses.
We can fix this be either using a chip that allows a custom character set
that the PIC can write to Character Generation RAM (hence requirement for
this type of device)
or we can use a Character Generator (UP6566) that has character reversal
facility but only outputs RGB, thus the second post for recommendations for
a RGB -> Composite converter and Video mixer.
The first solution is most appealing to us if such a device exists

Hi,
If you already have video reversal done, is it possible to insert the text
before it gets reversed?

That's what I was thinking about though.. The output of the chargen is just
NTSC video lines. I was looking for an "outside the box" solution.
Here's another part number to look at, STV5730A-1 Thompson Micro
It's in a pic-driven video titler I am using for a microave video link.
I would have rolled it myself, but too many projects already, and at $80,
it was worth it.
Intuitive Circuits makes it. Not a lot of glue, and it locks to the
incoming NTSC very well, never had a hint that it wasn't steady. I don't
know about the charset though, except I remember them talking about how
they defined the font, so hopefully it's loadable, and that would do it for
you.

Taken from the STV5730 data sheet
[snip]
The user can redefine the total character set (except for the character
00H (zero)).
[snip]
Don't know how though.

Tony,
Could you tell me which page of data sheet mentions that user can define
character set ? It appears from block diagram that the character set is mask
programmable (ie. if we buy several thousand ,they may be able to supply a
version with 2 character sets (1 normal, 1 mirror image), we would rather
use something that does the job already and do not require large volume
orders).

David,
This chip has a fixed ROM character generator built in only. This does not
provide us a facility to mirror image the characters to suit the mirrored
video image from our camera.
Just to restate :
Video from our camera comes in
We add text to the video (OSD)
Composite video out (text and video) goes to the monitor
A control line on the monitor mirror images both text and video.
When we set this control line, we want to mirror the text so it reads
correctly.
The STV5730 does not have mirror character facility or RAM based user
changeable character set that we can modify.
In all other respects (Video in, OSD, composite video out ... it is great).
A chip from NEC UP6566 does have a mirror function for text but only
provides RGB output and does not genlock to incoming video, thus we need to
add
1) Sync separator (LM1881 is fine)
2) RBG -> Composite converter (Don't know of source)
3) Video mixer (maybe simple video opamp)
So.. a recommendation for RGB to Composite IC and Video mixer IC would
provide solution.
Alternately, A chip like STV5730 with character reverse or user defined
character set would work.

Top of page Pg 18 of the data sheet I have.
It is the page that shows how the characters are defined.
It is also mentioned on Pg 7 under Functional Description.
I cannot find out how this is made possible though.

Can you mirror image your display by reversing the connections to the
horizontal deflection winding on the yoke of your monitor?

Bob,
That is exactly how we currently mirror the display, the problem is that it
mirrors the text also, we want the text normal but display mirrored in one
of the modes of operation.
Thus, we need to mirror the text before the display,

Once, I did something similar. I used Elantec EL4583C as a sync separator
(way better than LM1881), EL4585C genlock chip and AD725 RGB -> PAL/NTSC
encoder. As a video mixer, I used AD8180. Nice thing is, that you can get
both AD chips as a samples.

By the way. What character generator IC did you use, does it have changeable
character RAM area ?

Thanks for that.
That is exactly the type of information I was hoping to get.
