the colon is no longer required
and given the problems it causes we are better off without it

what problems does it cause?  i like it as a delimiter, i like it a lot
actually.  i might even start adding it to replies.

It causes problems because people frequently forgot it or were unsure
where to put it.

The colon in the subject line causes issues with Outlook/Outlook
Express at times. There is a handy "feature" that tries to delete the
"RE:", yet sometimes just deletes everything in front of the colon.
Thus, the tags get stripped.

Microsoft, in its infinite wisdom, determined that most people use email for
FW: RE: FW: FW: FW: RE: FW: WAY FUNNY!  FW: FW: FW: RE: What to do about
ground hogs - you'll laugh!!!  :):):)

And subsequently determined that the colon was the key - with that bit
of knowledge they use some simple algorithm to delete portions of the
subject line to help limit the number of RE: and FW: that occur in a
given message.

Instead of a user problem, it became a technical problem, which they
'fixed', and which caused a problem with the list and had us doing all
sorts of things like putting the colons inside the brackets [OT:] etc.
Messed up a lot of filters (though I haven't had a problem since I
changed mine to simply filter at "[OT", "[PIC", etc).

Since the new list does not need the colon, it's safer not to use it
since outlook users replying to your message might inadvertently chop
off the tag and send the message to the Untagged section, instead of EE,
PIC, AVR, OT, etc.

I have had that happen and wondered how I had messed up the tag.
Don't ya just love it when your OS tries to outsmart you.
And yet I must stay with W98 as some of the radio equipment we program uses
DOS and others require Windows, and if you think MS is bad, look at
Motorola, no way are they going to release new programming software for the
older DOS stuff.

It's not the OS, simply the mail client, Outlook and Outlook Express are
once again the culprits.  Plenty of other good mail clients for Windows
though.

Certainly since the change I have almost nothing in my "catchall PIC"
folder. About the most recent item was one cc'd to the PICList, and I did
not have the PICList as a CC address in the rules. Oh well, I guess this is
what they call learning as you go ...
